The tumor cell specific replication of the vaccinia virus may be used to differentiate tumor cells from non-tumor cells using the fluorescent signal (GFP) in a tissue biopsy or blood sample. Other ex vivo applications (personalized medicine through infection of biopsies, circulating cancer cell detection) might also be feasible.
