- PRESIDENT AND CEO, GENELUX CORPORATION
Dr. Aladar A. Szalay, who formed Genelux Corporation in 2001, is internationally recognized as a leader in the monitoring of gene regulation and in whole cell and live organism imaging using light-emitting proteins or protein fusions. Based on his long-time research interest and recent discoveries, the company is utilizing live microorganisms to locate (diagnose) and eliminate (therapy) human tumor xenografts. In addition, to guide the research and development program of Genelux Corporation, Dr. Szalay currently holds a university professor position at the Rudolf Virchow Center of Experimental Biomedicine, School of Medicine, and also at the Biocenter at the University of Würzburg in Würzburg, Germany, where he directs a research program with graduate students and post-doctoral fellows on whole body imaging.
His previous academic appointments were: professor of molecular genetics and microbiology and founding director of the Center for Molecular Biology and Gene Therapy at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California; Canadian Pacific Endowed Chair Professor of biotechnology and molecular genetics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada; associate research scientist of molecular genetics at the Boyce Thompson Institute and adjunct professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and Gosney fellow at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.
He has published over 160 scientific papers and holds over 50 issued patents and patent applications. Dr. Szalay is the recipient of the Wilhelm Exner Award (Medal for Excellence in Science) from Austria and the Alexander von Humboldt Prize from Germany, among others. He has functioned as an advisor for numerous research foundations, served on the Board of Directors and the Scientific Advisory Board for several biomedical start-up companies and was invited to serve as a genetic engineering, gene transfer and therapy expert for several multi-national pharmaceutical and diagnostic equipment manufacturing companies in the US, Europe and Japan.

Dr. Joachim-Friedrich Kapp joined Genelux in 2005 as Chief Advisor of Corporate Strategies and Business Development. In 2007, he accepted the position of Director of Clinical Development, Oncology. He was elected to the Board of Directors in September 2006. Prior to his involvement with Genelux, Dr. Kapp worked for Schering AG, where he rose from a science director to President and Global Head of Therapeutics Business, before retiring in 2005. He has also worked in various capacities for Warner Lambert and its subsidiaries, including VP & Head of International Clinical Development. He holds an MD and a PhD from the University of Essen in Germany.

Dr. Albert Röder joined Genelux Corporation in 2004 after retiring from Roche Applied Science as Head of Global R&D and Marketing Support. In February of that year, he was elected to the Board of Directors of Genelux Corporation. His distinguished 33-year career in the pharmaceutical industry included several operative and leadership positions in research and development, manufacturing, marketing, strategy and business development within international cross-functional teams. Before joining Roche, he worked for Boehringer Mannheim Biochemical, where he rose to Head of Research in Enzymology/Proteinchemistry and Chemistry, then to Head of the Global Product Supply Unit. He holds a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Tübingen in Germany.

Dr. Ronald Roy A. Simus joined Genelux Corporation as the company’s first investor over five years ago when the company was first attempting to build its initial scientific discoveries into a full-fledged biomedical research and development company. Since this early stage, Dr. Simus has been intimately involved with growth and evolution of the company, including management, corporate strategy, fundraising and operations. Today, he serves as Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Board of Directors. Dr. Simus holds a DDS and an MS in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. A native Canadian, Dr. Simus moved to California in 1984, where he completed his dental and orthodontic training at Loma Linda University. Prior to joining Genelux Corporation full time, Dr. Simus owned and operated a successful orthodontic practice in Redlands, California. He has also developed and managed several other businesses in the area.

Dr. Thomas served as the company’s first Chief Financial Officer before leaving the post in 2004. He has been a member of the Board of Directors since August 2002. He is currently Dean of the School of Business and Management at La Sierra University in Riverside, California, where he teaches finance, economics and entrepreneurship, a position he has occupied since July 1988. Dr. Thomas holds MBA degrees in finance and marketing, an MA in political economy and a PhD in economics and politics. He has received numerous awards honoring his success as a passionate teacher who motivates students to seek and achieve excellence, among them the Freedom Foundation’s Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education (1998), the Zapara Award to Teaching Excellence (1996) and the Riverside Chambers of Commerce Hero Award for Community Leadership (1995).

Charles Crocker joined Genelux this year as Business Advisor to the CEO and the Board of Directors. Mr. Crocker is Chairman and CEO of Crocker Capital, a private venture capital firm. He served as Chairman of the Board and CEO of BEI Technologies, Inc., a NASDAQ listed, diversified technology company, which he founded. BEI was sold to Schneider Electric, a global French conglomerate, in October, 2005. Mr. Crocker was also Chairman, CEO, and founder of BEI Medical Systems, a public medical device company, sold to Boston Scientific in 2002. Mr. Crocker is on the board of two public companies: Franklin Resources, Inc. and Teledyne Technologies, Inc. He is Chair of both the Franklin and Teledyne Compensation Committees.
Mr. Crocker is currently a director of the following private companies: Fiduciary Trust International, Bailard, Inc., and Mercator MedSystems, Inc. Mr. Crocker has been a director of a number of public companies during his career, including CooperVision, Chiron, Cooper Biomedical, Pope & Talbot and KeraVision. Mr. Crocker has been Chairman of the Board of Children’s Hospital in San Francisco, Chairman of the Hamlin School’s Board of Trustees, President of the Foundation of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and a Trustee of the Buck Center for Research in Aging. He currently serves as a Trustee of the Mary A. Crocker Trust. Mr. Crocker received his BS degree from Stanford University and MBA from the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Philip Schein, President of The Schein Group, is widely recognized as a leading international authority in the treatment of cancer. He also serves as Visiting Professor in Cancer Pharmacology at the University of Oxford. He was the founder and former Chairman and CEO of US Bioscience. His previous appointments include: Vice President of Worldwide Clinical Research and Development and Director of the Laboratory of Molecular Medicine at SmithKline & French Laboratories, Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology and Scientific Director of the Vincent T. Lombardi Cancer Research Center at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Senior Investigator and Head of the Clinical Pharmacology Section of the Medicine Branch, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland.
Dr. Schein has authored over 350 scientific articles and texts and has been awarded 11 patents. He was appointed to the National Cancer Advisory Board by President Clinton. He served as President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and has chaired the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee. He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine, where he chaired the Medical Oncology Committee. Dr. Schein received his AB degree from Rutgers College and his MD from the Upstate Medical University. His post-graduate education was untaken at Harvard, Oxford and the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Schein is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
