- Founder & CEO, MindPiece Partners
Catherine J. Mackey, Ph.D. is founder of MindPiece Partners, a management consulting firm, and the former Sr. Vice President of Worldwide Research and Development for Pfizer Inc. She has 28 years of experience in the life science industry.
After receiving her Ph.D. degree in microbiology from Cornell University in 1983, Dr. Mackey spent the first part of her career in the agricultural biotechnology industry. She worked her way up from bench scientist to Vice President and head of Research and Development for DEKALB Genetics Corporation. During those years she led the team that won the race to genetically engineer corn – a breakthrough that transformed the seed industry. Dr. Mackey and her team went on to apply this technology to create several first-in-class seed products. She also spearheaded the application of DNA typing to commercial corn breeding – causing fundamental change in product development and blurring the lines between 'conventional' and 'biotech' R&D. She was member of DEKALB's executive team which sold the company to Monsanto in 1998 at a market capitalization of $3.8B.
Recognizing the potential application of genetics and genomic science to medicine, Dr. Mackey then joined Pfizer in 1999 to lead Genomic and Proteomic Sciences for human health at Pfizer's R&D headquarters in Groton, Conn. Soon she was appointed Vice President and head of Strategic Alliances with responsibility for Pfizer's substantial external research portfolio. In 2001 she was appointed Sr. Vice President of Pfizer Global R&D and Director of Pfizer La Jolla – a position she held for nine years. Dr. Mackey built Pfizer La Jolla into a vibrant R&D center of nearly 1000 people focused on the discovery and development of innovative medicines. In addition to her general management responsibilities at Pfizer La Jolla, Dr. Mackey was responsible for the exploratory development pipeline that delivered three key oncology compounds now on the market or in Phase III testing: Sunitinib (Sutent), Crizotinib (Xalkori), and Axitinib.
Dr. Mackey serves on numerous boards, consistent with her passion for healthcare and innovation. She serves on the board of directors of several for-profit corporations: YM Biosciences (AMEX:YMI), Althea Technologies, and Genelux Corporation, and well as several non-profit organizations including CONNECT, BIOCOM, Rady Children's Hospital, and Project Concern International.
