- CHIEF SCIENTIFIC OFFICER, GENELUX CORPORATION
Dr. Aladar A. Szalay, who formed Genelux Corporation in 2001, is internationally recognized as a leader in the monitoring of gene regulation and in whole cell and live organism imaging using light-emitting proteins or protein fusions. Based on his long-time research interest and recent discoveries, the company is utilizing live microorganisms to locate (diagnose) and eliminate (therapy) human tumor xenografts. In addition, to guide the research and development program of Genelux Corporation, Dr. Szalay currently holds a university professor position at the Rudolf Virchow Center of Experimental Biomedicine, School of Medicine, and also at the Biocenter at the University of Würzburg in Würzburg, Germany, where he directs a research program with graduate students and post-doctoral fellows on whole body imaging.
His previous academic appointments were: professor of molecular genetics and microbiology and founding director of the Center for Molecular Biology and Gene Therapy at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California; Canadian Pacific Endowed Chair Professor of biotechnology and molecular genetics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada; associate research scientist of molecular genetics at the Boyce Thompson Institute and adjunct professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and Gosney fellow at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.
He has published over 160 scientific papers and holds over 50 issued patents and patent applications. Dr. Szalay is the recipient of the Wilhelm Exner Award (Medal for Excellence in Science) from Austria and the Alexander von Humboldt Prize from Germany, among others. He has functioned as an advisor for numerous research foundations, served on the Board of Directors and the Scientific Advisory Board for several biomedical start-up companies and was invited to serve as a genetic engineering, gene transfer and therapy expert for several multi-national pharmaceutical and diagnostic equipment manufacturing companies in the US, Europe and Japan.

- PROFESSOR, MICROBIOLOGY DEPARTMENT, UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, WASHINGTON

Dr. Greenberg is currently Professor of the Microbiology Department at the University of Washington, School of Medicine, in Seattle, Washington. An expert in sociomicrobiology, Dr. Greenberg is widely credited for founding the field of quorum sensing. He holds an MS in Microbiology from the University of Iowa and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Massachusetts. Prior to joining the University of Washington, Dr. Greenberg held professorships at Cornell University in New York and the University of Iowa, College of Medicine. Dr. Greenberg is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and the American Academy of Microbiology, where he serves on the Board of Governors. He has previously served as Chief Scientific Officer for Quorum Sciences, Inc., and as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Integrated Genetics.

A leader in the study of cancer immunology and translational medicine, Francesco M. Marincola joined the Scientific Advisory Board in January 2007. He has worked with the National Institutes of Health since 1990, first as a member of the National Cancer Institute (a division of NIH) studying tumor immunology, then as Chief of Immunogenetics in the Department of Transfusion Medicine. He is currently Chief of the Infectious Disease and Immunogenetics Section. He is a highly-regarded speaker and the author of numerous scientific articles, reviews, books and book chapters. In 2003, he founded the Journal of Translational Medicine and also serves as its editor-in-chief. He received his surgical training and research training in transplant and cancer immunology at Stanford University after earning his undergraduate and then his medical degree from the University of Milan, Italy, in 1978.

R. Mark Buller, PhD, is widely recognized as a leader in the field of viral pathogenesis. He currently serves as a Professor at Saint Louis University, Missouri, in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. Dr. Buller is also Director of the Aerosol Biology Core of the multi-institutional Midwest Regional Center for Excellence in Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research. Before joining Saint Louis University, he was head of the Poxvirus Pathogenesis Group at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Buller holds a PhD in Virology from the Institute of Virology in Glasgow. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed scientific articles, reviews or book chapters and is a member of the editorial review boards of several major scientific publications. Dr. Buller has also served as an invited reviewer, committee member or speaker on the topic of bioterrorism and biomedical research.

A widely-recognized surgeon and researcher, Dr. Fong is Chief of Gastric and Mixed Tumor Service and Murray F. Brennan Chair in Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York. He is also Professor of Surgery at Cornell University Medical College, where in 1984 he received his MD. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications, reviews, textbooks, editorials and books chapters. He is a highly sought-after lecturer and holds several committee and editorial board memberships with national scientific societies and journals. Among other honors, Dr. Fong is the recipient of the 1996 Boyer Research Award from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the 1999 James IV Surgical Traveler Award from the James IV Association of Surgeons, and the 2002 Shipley Award from the Southern Surgical Association. He joined the CAIB in early 2006.

Professor Philippe Sansonetti, an international expert in microbial infection, immunology and pathogenesis, joined Genelux Corporation in January 2008. He is currently Professor and Head of the Molecular Microbial Pathogenesis Unit at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France. Sansonetti is an elected member of the French Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea and the American Academy of Microbiology and is a corresponding member of the French Academy of Medicine. He has been awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, the Prix d'Excellence Jacques Monod en Biologie Moléculaire, the Prix AGIR du Conseil Pasteur-Weitzmann, the Grand Prix de l'Académie de Médecine, the Prix Louis Jeantet de Médecine and the Robert Koch Prize and Medal. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles and has served as editor, associate editor or editorial board member of several international scientific journals, including Cellular Microbiology and Infection and Immunity.

Dr. Albert Röder joined Genelux Corporation in 2004 after retiring from Roche Applied Science as Head of Global R&D and Marketing Support. In February of that year, he was elected to the Board of Directors of Genelux Corporation. His distinguished 33-year career in the pharmaceutical industry included several operative and leadership positions in research and development, manufacturing, marketing, strategy and business development within international cross-functional teams. Before joining Roche, he worked for Boehringer Mannheim Biochemical, where he rose to Head of Research in Enzymology/Proteinchemistry and Chemistry, then to Head of the Global Product Supply Unit. He holds a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Tübingen in Germany.

Dr. Staib holds a PhD in biochemistry and human genetics and a master’s degree in biochemistry, microbiology and animal physiology from the University of Würzburg. Her PhD thesis was honored as the best in the University of Würzburg in 1998. In 2007 she completed her habilitation in Virology at the Medical Faculty of the Technical University of Munich in Germany. Dr. Staib joined Genelux Corporation in 2006. As head of product development, she manages virus manufacturing, product optimization, quality control and analytical characterization. She collaborates with the scientific research team for preclinical product testing and with the clinical trials team for preparation of regulatory documents. Prior to joining Genelux Corporation, she was head of a research group at the Institute of Virology at the Technical University of Munich in Germany, where she gained eight years of experience carrying out leading research in the field of orthopox- and vaccinia viruses, with an emphasis on vaccine development and optimization. Dr. Staib has (co-)authored a variety of original peer-reviewed scientific publications, as well as reviews, book chapters and patent applications.
